To date, the EOK’s Demetra Fund for Breast Cancer Research and Patient Assistance has committed to and/or fulfilled $400,000 in pledges to fund research and/or patient care initiatives at Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) and at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Care Center. (MGHCC). These patient care named funds continue to be the only ones of their kind solely benefitting breast cancer patients at both institutions and fund much needed items such as compression sleeves, food and gas cards, rent, transportation, and the like. The research projects we fund focus solely on the eradication of breast cancer through various avenues, as per our mission statement.
The latest research project at DFCI, to which we will be providing substantial support in the form of a $100,000 pledge over 3 years, commencing in 2016 is being led by two prominent and brilliant Greek doctors, Constantine S. Mitsiades, MD, PhD and Eugen Dhimolea, PhD, who are conducting groundbreaking experiments in the areas of breast cancer metastasis and drug resistance to the disease. They have developed a series of laboratory culture systems which simulate the tumor’s 3D architecture and its metastatic microenvironment in order to better understand which therapies and treatments will be more successful. This area of cuttingedge research has the potential to establish major inroads in the cure of breast cancer.
