In 2011, the EOK Scholarship Fund was established in recognition of The Hellenic Women's Club's 75th anniversary. Each year, scholarships of $5,000 are awarded at The Mistletoe Ball based on academic merit, community service and leadership efforts. To date, the EOK has given over $405,000 to women of Greek descent who are dedicated to pursuing their higher education goals.
Meet our 2025 scholars
Maria Metaxia Bellios
Maria is entering her first year at Northeastern University, where she plans to study business and law. She grew up in Maryland where she went to high school - Maria took 14 AP classes and was very involved in student government, the Mock Trial Club and Model United Nations. Outside of school, Maria has been active in leadership roles at the GOYA at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Baltimore, where she chaired their annual Vasiloppita fundraiser. She also helped to make blankets for children undergoing treatment at Johns Hopkins Children Hospital, and volunteered with Baltimore city students as well as the Franciscan Center of Baltimore. In the words of her school counselor, “Sometimes a student comes along that is so impressive you just know that they are destined for great things."
Eleni Georgountzos
Eleni grew up in Boston and is now a rising junior studying mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon. She serves as the Director of Operations of TartanAUV, Carnegie Mellon’s robotic submarine competition team, which has successfully competed at the national level. She also helps to organize outreach events to introduce young female students in the Pittsburgh area to robotics - this includes speaking with their parents about how to support their daughters’ interests in engineering. Outside of school, Eleni is very involved in her church communities in both Boston (the Annunciation Cathedral of New England) and at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Pittsburgh during the academic year.
Lucy Kontos
Lucy recently graduated from Lexington High School and is starting her first year at Wellesley College. In high school, she volunteered with Verge Inclusive Athletics and served as a running buddy to children with developmental disabilities; she assisted with the fall musical production at the Jonas Clarke Middle School; she served as a Teacher’s Assistant for underclassmen English and also read books to preschoolers at Lexington Children’s Place. Lucy was invited to take part in a Committee that reimagined the leveling process in her High School. She also was awarded the Bryn Mawr Book Prize, given to “a female student who exhibits an intense intellectual commitment, has a self-directed and purposeful vision of her life, and has a desire to make a meaningful contribution to the world.” Outside of school, Lucy has volunteered in organizing the Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church’s annual Greek Festival for the past several years.
Nicole Groussis
Nicole graduated from Northeastern University and is now pursuing a medical degree at George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences. While at Northeastern, Nicole worked as a “wish granter” at the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and also volunteered at Brigham and Women’s in the neonatal intensive care unit, comforting newborns. She served as a Clinical Assistant at Boston Children’s Hospital and also as a research assistant at an Alzheimer’s clinic at Mass General. As an undergraduate and also during her gap year, Nicole mentored pre-med students including through the Program for Research Assistants Development and Achievement at Boston Children’s Hospital. Her supervisor in the rare disease research program at Boston Children’s Hospital writes: “Perhaps most impressively, Nicole brings warmth and kindness to all her interactions - with colleagues, patients and families alike… Her professionalism and humanity shine and she models these values for those around her."
Athena Maramaldi
Athena is in her first year studying Classical Civilizations at Syracuse University. She grew up in Wellesley where she worked at a family-owned ice cream shop the past three years. Outside of work and school, Athena was heavily involved in community service activities including co-founding the Wellesley Chapter of Habitat for Humanity and volunteering with Kids Backing Kids. In the summer of 2024, Athena went to live with and help her grandmother in Athens - while there, she studied modern Greek and also she volunteered at the Hellenic Children’s Museum and Humanity Greece. As Athena's high school social studies teacher put it, “She is a student who embodies the values your scholarship seeks to honor- academic excellence, community engagement, leadership, and of course pride in her Greek heritage."
Stephanie Skouras
Stephanie is pursuing her medical degree at Northeastern University - after earning her bachelor’s degree at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Stephanie went to work as a scientist at Kymera Therapeutics before deciding to go back to medical school. She is a first generation Greek-American and the first woman in her family to pursue an education. Outside of her studies, Stephanie co-founded The Female Catalyst, an organization dedicated to advancing equity for women in STEM. She’s also worked with Women Accelerators and Project OnRamp, two organizations focused on empowering women in the life sciences. Stephanie taught at MCPHS and presented her research nationally, winning second place at the ISPE Boston Student Poster Competition as an undergraduate. She is also active in the Greek Orthodox Church in Watertown, MA. Her supervisor writes: “Stephanie has a remarkably strong work ethic and particularly high standards for achievement which she consistently meets or exceeds. Her sheer capability and potential for achievement professionally cannot be overstated."
Alexandra Nadia Papavassiliou
Alexandra is in her second year at Georgetown University where she has a 4.0 grade point average and is studying human science. Alex has volunteered in a biomedical lab using c elegans to investigate sensation and learning. Outside of her classwork, Alex serves as a class representative for Georgetown’s School of Health - in this elected position, she serves as a liaison between students, faculty and administration. She has also volunteered as a medical assistant at the VA Hospital in Washington DC and is a part of Georgetown’s Greek Club. In the words of her professor, “Alex is among the most promising rising sophomores that I have worked with in my 14 years at Georgetown. I can’t praise her enough and I can assure you that she is incredibly deserving of this scholarship."
